4 cars in the workshop – that goes wrong with the electro-busses in Bonn
Bonn – the federal city is climate capitol – likes to decorate itself with environmental friendly projects and was host to the world climate conference in November 2017. And because Diesel driving bans are commonly discussed, the public transport company (SWB) likes to show off their electro-bus-fleet. They own a total amount of 6 but: 4 are in mending right now.
The cold bothers the busses
It’s not going smooth in the Bonn E-mobility. But it’s not due to public transport but to the busses themselves. Research by the Union of German Traffic Companies (VDV) has shown that flow fluctuations and control systems fail. This can cause problems with the doors and the busses have to be recharged more often.
Bus producer burned down in Summer
“In cooperation with producer Sileo from Salzgitter we are currently upgrading our 6 busses, to make them more resistant and to increase the availability”, states SWB spokesperson Veronika John. So far there are no German E-bus producers and Sileo has its roots in Turkey. In August, their production workshop burned down completely.
Government and EU support electro mobility
190 busses are going through Bonn but only 3% are going on electricity. Countrywide, of 36.000 busses, only 100 are electric. All over, local communities are being piled up with governmental and EU funding due to the Diesel problem, but the VDV is critical of that. “On a short term, the e-bus cannot be the solution. To avoid traffic bans and citizens changing to public transport, you have to go with Euro-6-Diesel”, says VDV spokesperson Lars Wagner.
SWB also go with “clean Diesel”
Because here, emissions are much smaller compared to older models and according to EPRESS-information, it will only be possible in 10 years to completely change to electric busses.
Also the SWB goes with the “clean Diesel”. 64 busses already drive on the more environmental friendly EU-6-exhaustnorm.
But the electro-busses are especially popular amongst Bonners. “Our busses are very popular amongst our passengers, after all. They are being liked for their low level of noise and the driving comfort”, explains John.
Europe wide test phase
Like with all German e-bus-try outs, also in Bonn it’s only a test phase. With other European cities, Bonn is involved in the ZeEus-Project of the EU. Experiences and numbers should be published by summer 2018. Then, the discussion about e-busses will face its next round.
